Our School
Mission
The Academy of World Languages (AWL) will prepare students for a globally linked society through excellence in world languages, cultural studies and high academic standards.
AWL is a PreK-8 magnet school providing a diverse cultural climate and world-language learning opportunities including Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian and English as a Second Language (ESL). Our staff and students represent over 35 nationalities and languages.
Community Learning Centers
For our schools to transform, our communities must be revitalized. For our communities to revitalize, our schools must be transformed. They are dependent on each other and Community Learning Centers are the link.
What is a Community Learning Center (CLC)?
Schools and the communities they serve are closely linked. Seldom does one succeed without the success of the other. That's why our CLCs support student achievement, enrich and revitalize communities, and maximize the community's return on their financial investment.
We are very proud to be a CLC and a neighborhood anchor. We strive to go beyond academics to focus on the whole child by serving as a hub for community services that are available to all students, their families and the entire community. We are able to offer a variety of services thanks to the collaboration and support of our many partners and the committed community of Evanston.
Our Resource Coordinator
Jill Smith is the Resource Coordinator for the Academy of World Languages through the lead agency Community Learning Center Institute.
The key component of a CLC is the partners who provide services and support. To manage and align these valuable partnerships, our full-time, on-site Resource Coordinator, Jill Smith plays an integral role in the success of the Community Learning Center. To learn more about the services available at our school or how your company or organization can become a CLC partner or volunteer, please contact Jill Smith at (513) 363-7819 or via email.
Enrichment Program Manager — Community Learning Center Institute also provides an Enrichment Coordinator, Lizzy Slusher, to offer free after-school programming three days a week for AWL students in grades K-8. The "Dragon Zone" program features a variety of clubs that offer academic enrichment, mentoring, the chance to explore extracurricular interests such as art, sports, and technology, and much more!
AWL's Family Engagement Coordinator, Karen Chinchilla — The Family Engagement Coordinator works to promote a welcoming environment for all AWL families and engage them in our school community. She is also responsible for ensuring effective and consistent communication between staff and parents, and providing parents with the support they need to be informed and active partners in their children’s education. You can contact Karen at (513) 363-7812.
Local School Decision-Making Committee (LSDMC)
LSDMC is a group of parents, teachers and community representatives. The group functions in an advisory role to the principal, to determine program, policy and budget issues for the school.
